History of College

Government College, Manjeshwaram has been sanctified by the name of the legendary literary luminary Rashtrakavi Manjeshwaram Govinda Pai (1883-1963). He was an erudite scholar, gifted poet, polyglot and multi-faceted genius. He has substantially enriched diverse branches of Kannada literature. His creative compositions contain lofty ideals of secularism, humanism and universal brotherhood. It is gratifying to note that the staff and students of the college imbibe and uphold these noble ideals. Govt. College Manjeshwaram is a befitting monument designed to perpetuate the fond memories of the noble soul.

The institution was formally inaugurated by Sri. E.K. Nayanar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala on 22nd September 1980. Sri. R. Gundu Rao, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri. Baby John, Minister of Education, Government of Kerala, Dr. A. Subba Rao Minister of Irrigation, Government of Kerala, and Sri. Veerappa Moily, Minister of Finance, Government of Karnataka were present on the occasion. For over a year in the beginning, the college functioned in the ‘Vanabhojana Sala’ belonging to Sreemad Anandeswara Temple (SAT). In October 1990 the college was shifted to the present campus that sprawls out in an area of about 32 acres of land. The campus is located at Hosabettu Village in Manjeshwaram Taluk of Kasaragod District of Kerala close to its northern border with Karnataka. It is 20 km South of Mangalore and 28 km North of Kasaragod. The nearest railway station is Manjeshwaram, hardly 1 km away from the campus.

The college was upgraded as UG College in 1991 with B.A. degree course in Kannada. B.Com. degree course was started in the year 1993. BA TTM course was started in 1998 and B.Sc. Statistics in 1999. M.Com. course was started in the year 2004 and M.Sc. Statistics in 2012. With the establishment of the Kannur University in 1996, the college that was previously affiliated to the Calicut University got affiliated to the new university. The college maintains a peaceful academic and intellectual atmosphere for learning and development. The following courses are offered by the college.
